All Aboard!

I seem to have the sea on my mind at the moment - but that is probably not surprising given that we are already planning the summer cruise in Mrs Muir and what needs to be completed before we leave.

This Tando boat kit has sat on my desk waiting for a chance to be played with for some time now and no better excuse than to use it for my project for A Vintage Journey for this month's challenge which is

All Aboard!

Brenda is our host for our anniversary challenge.

Come and join us in our open house challenge where you choose what you want to step aboard with. Although we still need to see you working within our styles and genres you can choose whether you share a card, some altered art, a journal page, a painting, in fact whatever you fancy, but with no theme to follow. Let's have some fun, share our current creations and enjoy the informal feel of our birthday celebration.

The boat (or rather dinghy!) is made of thick grey board which I first painted with gesso to seal and then PaperArtsy Space Cadet Chalk Paint. The crackle effect was created with DecoArt Weathered Wood which then had brown inks (Archival and Distress) blended on top. However, after I had taken this photograph I didn't like the effect so the inks were wiped off and I sanded back a bit more of the crackle!

I stamped a sailing boat on some tissue and added it to the back of the frame.

A couple of embellishments which got the "rusty" treatment using DecoArt products. I love that you can actually get the same effect on greyboard (the compass) and metal (the word tab). I have used two or three different colours of DecoArt Fluid Acrylics and finally splotched on Quinacridone Gold.

This is how the oars started out! but when I finally went to adhere them to the dinghy they were just not a sufficient contrast. So .... they got painted in brown paint!  A bit of a shame as I really liked this effect!

I decided that my edges needed a bit of treatment so used some tissue tape to hide all the differing states of crackle I managed to achieve!

More rusting on this metal embellishment and you can see a bit more clearly how well the Weathered Wood knocked back to reveal the blue underneath. I am pleased to say that our dinghy (known as Gertie for some unknown reason!) is in pristine condition!

I used a World Map stamp to create these little rolled charts.

The cog is a paper clay moulding which again took the "rusting" paints very well.

A Tim Holtz Vintage Relative .......

So it's All Aboard for A Vintage Journey (and Mrs Muir eventually!).

I do hope you will find time to join in our challenge and of course for some fabulous inspiration then DO hop on over to our challenge post as my Creative Guide teamies have some amazing projects to share.

Thank you for joining me today. This is a scheduled post as I am in Ireland at the moment (just south of Galway) enjoying traditional music and concertina workshops!

Have a great weekend.

A wonderful project Jennie and just perfect for the theme!! I just love the way you put all those different elements together, (seems we both fell for that little sailor guy, - great mminds lol). The aging of the oars etc is very clever, a great project!

Completely enchanting, Jennie - the weathered crackle on the boat is wonderful. I agree it's a shame to have lost it on the oars, but you can still see the echo under the brown, and it was absolutely the right choice to make them more wooden to stand out. Love all the rusted elements too. Fabulous!

This is utterly delightful Jennie, beautifully created with love. It's shabby and vintaged at the same time with some great timeworn techniques. I can't believe we've been sharing this journey for 3 years, it's wonderful being part of this together concocting new ideas and trying out new things. Thank you for all your support and your amazing contributions.
Hope you've had an amazing week. Huge hugs xxx

Although I know NOTHING about boats or the sea(Midwest USA here) I do love this make. I love the crackle like it is an old boat, and the little maps were a great idea.
Absolutely gorgeous, I love the soft blue and the shape of the arch is absolutely perfect for, your design. Beautifully embellished. Have a lovely weekend. Tracy x

Jennie, this is adorable! I love the crackle finish on the dinghy, and that you went with the brown on the oars-perfect! And sanding back some of the crackle was a creative stroke of genius!
